With our 4x4 SUV's, this route climbs steadily into the highlands via the legendary Moteng and Mafika Lisiu passes — high-altitude mountain drives offering world-class scenery across the Maluti range.
The journey into the interior is defined by raw elevation. We navigate the towering Moteng Pass and the spectacular Mafika Lisiu Pass, both renowned as some of the highest and most scenic paved passes in Southern Africa. These are not merely roads; they are engineering masterclasses that snake along the ridgelines, offering unspoiled vistas as far as the eye can see and world-class mountain views that change with every hairpin turn.
A relaxed stop along the crest of the pass allows you to enjoy a mountainside lunch while soaking in the dramatic, high-altitude surroundings. After lunch, the adventure continues to the iconic Katse Dam, the centerpiece of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
This is not a standard dam visit. A local Lesotho guide will lead you on an in-depth and engaging tour of this remarkable engineering feat. The highlight of this expedition is a rare, immersive experience: we take you deep inside the Katse Dam wall itself. You will leave the sunlight behind to explore the internal galleries of the massive concrete arc, standing within the belly of the wall to truly grasp the scale and pressure of the water held back by this 185-meter-high giant. It is a haunting and awe-inspiring perspective of the "Kingdom in the Sky's" most famous landmark.
Complementing the raw power of the dam is a visit to the Katse Botanical Garden, the highest botanical garden in Africa. Created to rescue and preserve indigenous flora before the reservoir flooded the valley, this garden is a sanctuary for Lesotho's rare alpine plants. Explore a world of medicinal herbs and unique succulents, including the legendary Spiral Aloe (Lesotho’s national flower), all with the sweeping blue expanse of the Katse Dam as your backdrop. It is a moment of quiet beauty amidst the rugged grandeur of the Maluti peaks.
After a day of soaring altitudes and concrete giants, you will retreat to the quiet comfort of a local guest lodge. Here, you will experience the genuine warmth of highland hospitality with a traditional evening meal and a restful night surrounded by the silence of the peaks.
Accommodation: Local Guest Lodge (Dinner, Bed & Breakfast included).
This tour is specifically designed for travelers who appreciate both natural grandeur and human ingenuity. Prepare for extreme altitudes and winding mountain roads that offer some of the finest driving scenery on the continent. From the dizzying heights of Mafika Lisiu to the cold concrete corridors inside the dam wall, this is an experience of scale and power.
We conveniently take care of the border fees and tourism fees to give you a hassle free experience.
To ensure your safety, our driver/ guide is experienced and will make sure you are looked after throughout the entire journey.
